1. Who is your inspiration?
Sherieta: I wouldn’t restrict inspiration to a ‘who’ as I am inspired by almost everything and everyone around me; I can look at a tree and write a song. Of course, even the most basic situations humans face daily provide constant inspiration for the songs I write.
2. Which local and international artist would you like to do a collaboration with?
Sherieta:
Local: Duane Stephenson, Queen Ifrica
International: John Legend, Mary J. Blige
3. Are you working at an album ? If yes , Can you go into some more detail
about that?
Sherieta: Yes, I am working on an album. I’m not able to say much in terms of release date, etc. at this time, but that info will be give as soon as it is possible.
4. Do you prefer working in the studio or performing live on stage?
Sherieta: Stage definitely. I enjoy entertaining my audience and also ‘proving’ myself- what they hear on record is REAL. I enjoy being able to reiterate and reinforce the emotions expressed in my songs. It’s an awesome experience everytime I step on a stage.
5. Was there ever a moment in your career where you thought about quitting
the music business?
Sherieta: No, thankfully. I like to think that I’ve been blessed to work with the people I’ve worked with. Always supportive and pushing me to be my best. With that kind of support, it’s hard to consider giving up, even when things get really rough.
6. Do you have any other career interests outside of music?
Sherieta: Yes I do. There are a number of business ventures that I plan to venture into later on in life- real estate for example.
7. When you’re not performing or working on a new track, how do you like to relax?
Sherieta: I like reading and playing video games. I enjoy going with my friends or getting some good, old sleep.
8. What do you think is the future of Jamaican music?
Sherieta: I believe that the future of Jamaican music is dependent on the vision of our artistes. It is important that we see Jamaican music as a product and treat it as such. If that is done, there will be no room for shortsightedness and mediocrity, and every song released will be of the highest quality, favourable to the ears of people here in Jamaica and overseas. With regards to the topics of our songs, there is cause for concern. Music has one of, if not the most powerful influences on people and in that light I say without apology that a number of our songs are giving our youth very little moral ground to stand on. Some artistes take the stance that it is not their responsibility to guide the young. I, however, tailor my music to positively impact on all people that will hear it. I plan to be a part of the positive movement in the future of Jamaica’s music.
9. So which modern artists do you admire right now?
Sherieta: Queen Ifrica is a force to be reckoned with. I admire her ability to command the attention of her audience and the consistency of the messages in her songs. Busy Signal has amazing voice and I love his use of imagery. I-Octane is a powerhouse, full of energy and nuff vibes and he doesn’t play with words- straight to the point- I appreciate that. Beyonce is a supertalented young woman with unwavering drive and determination and Junior Gong is definitely one of my favorite lyricists.
10. What has been the best experience you have had to this point being in the music industry?
Sherieta: Opening for Tarrus Riley, Duane Stephenson and I-Octane in Europe in January 2010. One of the things I love most about European audiences is that they appreciate good music. Even when they don’t know the words of the song or they’ve never heard it before they are rocking and dancing.
